Always read the safety label: Our response to BBC Watchdog

Recently, the BBC's consumer affairs program "Watchdog" aired an episode on candle safety, highlighting the potential hazards of using candles and providing tips for consumers to follow in order to stay safe.

As a candle maker (and lover), I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of the key points from the episode and offer some additional advice on how to safely enjoy candles in your home.

Tip #1: Follow all provided instructions

First and foremost, it's important to always follow the instructions on your candle label.

This includes information on the proper use and handling of the candle, as well as the recommended burn time and other safety precautions.

By following the instructions on your candle label, you can help to prevent accidents and ensure that you are using your candle safely and responsibly.

Tip #2: Never leave candles unattended

Another key safety tip is to never leave a lit candle unattended. Candles can be a fire hazard, and it's important to never leave a burning candle unattended, even for a short period of time.

This is especially important if you have pets or small children in your home, as they may accidentally knock over a lit candle or come into contact with the flame.

Tip #3: Burn candles in a safe area

It's also important to place your candles on a stable and heat-resistant surface. This will help to prevent the candle from tipping over or coming into contact with flammable materials, which could cause a fire.

In addition, make sure to keep your candles away from drafts, as a strong gust of wind can cause the flame to flicker or even blow out, which could lead to a fire hazard.

Tip #4: Trim your candle's wicks

Finally, it's important to regularly trim the wick of your candle to keep it at a safe length.

A long wick can produce a larger flame, which can be a fire hazard and can also cause the candle to burn too quickly.

By regularly trimming the wick to a safe length, you can help to prevent accidents and ensure that your candle burns safely and efficiently.

Conclusion: Practise safe burning & enjoy

In conclusion, candles can be a wonderful source of fragrance and ambiance in your home, but it's important to follow safety measures to prevent accidents and fires.

By following the instructions on your candle label, never leaving a lit candle unattended, placing your candles on a stable and heat-resistant surface, and regularly trimming the wick, you can safely enjoy candles in your home.
